Robert W. Karpinski collection, 1746-1969.

This collection, donated by Robert Karpinski in the late 1960's, primarily reflects Louis Karpinski's activities as a professor of mathematics. It includes several of Louis Karpinski's publications, as well as other published material that he presumably found useful. This collection also contains a collection of letters that span the years of 1746 through 1890. Material in the Robert W. Karpinski collection include articles, notes, correspondence, magazines, newspapers, newsletters, photographs, lithographs, a poster, and an invitation. The collection is divided into four sections: the first contains documents that directly relate to Louis Karpinski's life and research, the second is comprised of various published material, the third includes a collection of letters from the 16th and 17th centuries, and the last contains miscellaneous material. Within each section, folders are organized chronologically.

Robert W. Karpinski was a professor of geology at the University of Illinois at Chicago during the late 1960s. It is likely that he is the son of mathematician and cartographer Louis Karpinski. The elder Karpinski taught mathematics at the University of Michigan during the late 1930s.
